However, the goal is to eventually out-microblog twitter, or get Twitter to support OpenMicroBlogging.

Unlike Twitter, it can federate with other Open MicroBlogging sites (and more of them are popping up). The community is definitely growing, and already features a lot of people from the software community. Plus, the feature set is constantly expanding – identica already has groups and tags (which are incredibly useful and surprisingly lacking in Twitter) with file sharing, location awareness, and more planning for the next couple months.
