Take a look at identi.ca. Unlike Twitter, it can federate with other Open MicroBlogging sites (and more of them are popping up). The community is definitely growing, and already features a lot of people from the software community. Plus, the feature set is constantly expanding – identica already has groups and tags (which are incredibly useful and surprisingly lacking in Twitter) with file sharing, location awareness, and more planning for the next couple months.
Hi Craig,
I had heard about identi.ca and it sounds interesting. However, when it comes to this type of service, the people using it are the most important aspect. I take it that there’s no federation with twitter?
Best,
Ismael
There is some federation with Twitter – many people use it. However, the goal is to eventually out-microblog twitter, or get Twitter to support OpenMicroBlogging.
Here’s information about the Twitter integration:

Also, identi.ca supports the Twitter API, so all existing Twitter clients will work with it.
Thank you Craig. I’ll take a look when I have some time.
Best,
Ismael
